Spotify and Happiness Saigon reimagined Vietnam’s biggest celebration, blending the country's traditional folklores, music, and personalisation into a cultural experience for the digital age

Vietnam’s 80th Independence Day marks eight decades of national pride and cultural heritage. The occasion has been celebrated through parades, ceremonies, and public gatherings, bringing generations together under a shared sense of identity and history.

But in recent years, patriotism has taken on new forms for Vietnam’s young generation. It no longer lives only in physical spaces; it now pulses through social media feeds, music playlists, and shared digital moments - blending the pride of the past with the energy of the present. This shift opened a unique challenge for Spotify. Known for its My Spotify platform that gives every listener a personalised music identity, the brand faced Vietnam’s most collective occasion of the year. How could Spotify keep its strength in personalisation while embracing a moment built on unity?

Happiness Saigon agency created 'Viet Spirits Through Music', a campaign that transformed Independence Day into a cultural stage on Spotify - where personal playlists and national pride come together to form one shared soundscape, celebrating the individuality of listeners while amplifying the collective spirit of the nation.

The campaign launched with an in-app experience that transformed each listener’s music habits and a quick music personality test into one of eight unique Vietnamese Spirit identities - each tied to a legendary folklore character every Vietnamese knows:

The Romantic - Tiên Dung & Chử Đồng Tử: For the ones who make everyone fall in love with Vietnam.

The Melancholic – Nàng Tô Thị: For the poetic souls turning Vietnam’s pain into power.

The Optimist – Mai An Tiêm: For the believers in resilience, freedom, and new beginnings.

The Warrior – Thánh Gióng: For the brave hearts who fought for independence.

The Dreamer – Tấm: For the dreamers opening Vietnam to the world.

The Pathfinder – Lạc Long Quân & Âu Cơ: For the pioneers sketching the first outlines of the nation.

The Old Soul – Lang Liêu: For the keepers of tradition ensuring Vietnam never forgets its roots.

The Storyteller – Trạng Quỳnh: For the voices amplifying Vietnam’s tales across generations.

Each user received a personalised playlist and shareable assets for their spirit identity, turning individual listening habits into part of a nationwide cultural celebration.

The campaign then introduced those Viet spirits derived from Vietnam music history through eight contextual outdoor stunts with eight large-scale OOH stunts across Ho Chi Minh City. Each spirit is brought to life with iconic Vietnamese artists who share the same Spirit identity, turning their music into a symbol of that spirit’s essence.

  • Love Padlocks – Mống Bridge: Symbolising lasting love and connection, representing the Romantic Spirit.
  • Flag and Truck – War Remnants Museum, Thánh Gióng Monument, History Museum: Celebrating national pride and resilience, tied to the Warrior Spirit.
  • Large Hiflex Banner – Bạch Đằng Wharf: An open, bustling riverside spot symbolizing the Pathfinder Spirit.
  • Conical Hat Installation – Bến Thành Market: A timeless cultural icon, reflecting the Old Soul Spirit.
  • Letter Installation – Hiên Concept: A space for expression and emotional embracing, representing the Dreamer Spirit.
  • Vinyl Record – Nhâm Coffee: A nostalgic object in a nostalgic space, tied to the Melancholic Spirit.
  • Book Installation – Hải An Bookstore: A symbol of heritage and knowledge, also reflecting the Storyteller Spirit.
  • Sail Boat – Saigon Paddle Area: Representing dreams and the desire to reach new horizons, tied to the Optimist Spirit.

To make the experience even more engaging, small cultural gifts are prepared for those who visit the stunts and share their own 'Viet Spirits' moments online. Visitors can receive symbolic items like incense sticks - a gesture of remembrance and tradition, or a bandana scarf - a youthful token of identity and pride.

With Viet Spirits Through Music, Happiness Saigon reimagined folklore through modern design and storytelling, proving how a brand can celebrate history while speaking directly to a new generation.
